What is Therapeutic Touch?

Therapeutic Touch is a contemporary interpretation of several ancient healing practices. It is a consciously directed process of energy exchange during which the practitioner uses the hand as a focus to facilitate the healing process. In a session, practitioners place their hands on or near their patient’s body with the intention to help or heal. The focus is on balancing the energies of the total person and stimulating the body’s own natural healing ability, consciously directing energies and interacting with the patients energy field.

Therapeutic Touch was developed in the early 1970’s through the pioneering work of Dolores Kreiger, PhD, RN and Doran Kuntz, a natural healer. The technique can be used alone or with conventional medical treatment.

Therapeutic Touch (TT) is a scientifically based intervention. Research using TT has been funded by the Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has been conducted at major hospitals and universities by scientists and nurses in the health care field.

TT is currently being taught in more than 80 countries throughout the world. Therapeutic Touch promotes relaxation and a sense of well-being and comfort. TT is effective in decreasing anxiety, altering the perception of pain and mobilizing the individual’s own healthy energies to restore health, balance and order.
